CS Bett Visits internationally Acclaimed KEPHIS Analytical Chemistry Laboratory

KEPHIS headquarters, Nairobi – The CS Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Hon. Willy Bett visited the KEPHIS laboratory complex and saw firsthand how produce destined for the European Union (EU) market undergoes analyses before export.

Exporters use the government recognized and internationally accredited laboratory to analyze their produce such as beans and peas with pods and ensure that it does not exceed the recommended Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) set by the EU.

The CS was also shown how the laboratory analyses locally consumed food for pesticide residue and heavy metal contaminants. The laboratory also offers advisory services to small holder and large scale farmers on the fertility status of agro inputs such as soil and water.

He was taken through the different sections of the laboratory, from sample collection and  processing, soil analysis, water analysis, pesticide residue laboratory, heavy metal section, equipment room, fertilizer and manure section and pesticide formulation laboratory.

The laboratory was recently re-accredited hence it’s competency in obtaining reliable and credible data for plant export requirements is guaranteed. Kenya through KEPHIS will be able to test the produce before it is exported thus building confidence in exporting countries particularly the EU where majority of the country’s flowers, fruits and vegetables go. Horticulture stakeholders can also rest assured that the level of compliance to market access requirements is continuously being monitored therefore Kenya’s horticulture, worth about KES 100 billion annually, can continue having market access to the EU.
He later addressed staff and urged them to continue working for the good of the agriculture industry and the country.
