The merchant should observe the following prior to being fully registered to handle seed maters.

REQUIREMENT FOR REGISTRATION AS A SEED MERCHANT

The merchant should observe the following prior to being fully registered to handle seed matters:-

  • The company must be a registered company with the registrar of companies. This also applies to individuals wishing to register as a seed merchant.

  • Has to familiarize oneself with the Seeds and Plant Varieties Act (Cap. 326) . which clearly indicates rules and regulations pertaining to seed trade.

  • Is  required to fill in FORM SR 3 detailing the areas the company wants to be registered for .

  • Depending on what the company has applied for one will be required to be conversant with the area/ crop that is registering for and trained personnel who are conversant with seed crop management.

  • Has to have the necessary infrastructure i.e. farming tools, machinery for processing and storage facilities if necessary and marketing/ distribution channels and facilities.

  • Has adequate land which is either leased, contracted or owned for seed crop production, if involved in local seed production.

  • Has to have adequate trained personnel in all areas of registration to ensure proper seed propagation.

  • Has to establish seed quality control systems from development/acquisition through distribution to the farming community.

Note: 
The merchant is held responsible for all seed quality aspects under his registration at all levels of seed handling and exchange.
