The Analytical Chemistry Lab (ACL) evaluates the quality and safety of agricultural inputs such as soil, fertilizer, irrigation water, pesticides and produce. The labs listed are:

1.    Organic Chemistry lab
This lab carries out analyses of: pesticide residue in fresh produce, pesticide formulations and mycotoxin in cereals and groundnuts for Aflatoxins

2.    Inorganic Chemistry lab
It deals with analysis of:  fertilizers and manure, soil fertility, heavy metal in fresh produce and environmental samples such as fish, irrigation water suitability and animal feeds

3.    Food Microbiology lab
This lab performs analysis of microbes in food and water for Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus and yeasts and moulds.

The plant health laboratories perform diagnostics for plant pests ie. Insects, viruses, fungi, bacteria and nematodes. The labs listed are:

1.    Mycology lab
This lab performs diagnosis of plant pathogenic fungi. The diagnosis involves culturing of fungi on selective media.

2.    Bacteriology lab
This lab performs diagnosis for plant pathogenic bacteria through culturing and identification.

3.    Virology lab
This lab deals with the diagnosis of plant pathogenic viruses by use of serological techniques such as ELISA.

4.    Nematology lab
Here, isolation and morphological identification of plant pathogenic nematodes is done.

5.    Entomology lab
In this lab, identification of insect pests is done using morphological techniques. Rearing of insects is done under controlled conditions in order to study them.

6.    Molecular Biology Lab
This laboratory supports all other plant health labs through diagnostics of plant pests using molecular techniques such as Conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Real time PCR and LAMP among others.
In addition, the lab also supports other activities like genetic purity testing for seeds like maize.
